Workshop - Photography: Learning Outcome

This blog is part of our study. This Thinking activity is based on the Photography Workshop and was assigned by Dr. Dilip Barad sir Department of English MKBU.In this task, we have to write a blog on the learning outcome of the photography workshop.

Introduction of Mr. Kaushik Ghelani sir:-

Mr. Kaushik Ghelani is a distinguished wildlife photographer and filmmaker, renowned for his expertise in capturing the beauty of the natural world. His contributions extend beyond the lens, as he serves as a columnist at Mumbai Samachar and actively engages in producing wildlife films for various government departments. His involvement in wildlife documentation spans multiple assignments, showcasing his commitment to conservation through visual storytelling.

During a workshop, Kaushik Sir generously shared his wealth of knowledge about photography, offering valuable insights that greatly enriched our understanding of the art. His dedication to wildlife conservation is evident in his collaboration with government departments, where he plays a crucial role in creating impactful films. Kaushik Sir's storytelling prowess is exemplified by his publication of a compelling story for International Tigers Day in Hindustan Times. His images are set to grace the pages of the upcoming WWF Calendar for 2024, a testament to the visual appeal and significance of his work.

Distinct from conventional wildlife photographers, Mr. Ghelani approaches his subjects with a unique perspective. Rather than merely seeing animals, he perceives them as characters in the vast tapestry of the forest. To him, the forest itself is akin to a woman who adorns different attires to celebrate various festivals.

Influenced by the literary works of Dhruv Bhatt, Kaushik Sir's connection to nature goes beyond the visual, encompassing a profound appreciation for the intricate relationships within ecosystems. As a token of his commitment to environmental awareness, he graciously shared a video clip highlighting World Environment Day, inspiring us to reflect on the importance of preserving our planet.

Mr. Kaushik Ghelani emerges not only as a skilled wildlife photographer and filmmaker but also as a passionate advocate for environmental conservation. His ability to blend art and advocacy makes him a notable figure in the realm of wildlife documentation and storytelling.

Now, let's delve into the details of the workshop, which was thoughtfully organized into two distinct sessions.

An interesting addition to our group was a Life Science student, bringing a diverse perspective to the discussion. The session commenced precisely at 12 o'clock, and the first part, led by Mr. Kaushik Ghelani, was dedicated to providing essential insights into photography.

Here are some rules or things to remember while clicking the photo:-

1. Center Focus Rule

This rule suggests placing the main subject of the photograph in the center of the frame to draw immediate attention. It's a classic composition technique that provides a clear and straightforward presentation of the subject.

2. Golden Point

The Golden Point, often referred to as the Golden Ratio or Golden Spiral, involves placing the key elements of the photo at strategic points determined by the Fibonacci sequence. This not only adds visual interest but also creates a harmonious and balanced composition. By understanding and applying the Golden Point, photographers can achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result in their images.

It involves creating balance and harmony by mirroring elements in a scene. Photographers can look for naturally occurring symmetry or create it by adjusting their composition. Symmetrical images often convey a sense of order and stability, making them visually appealing to viewers.

8. Break the Rule

Experimenting with different angles, unconventional framing, or playing with lighting can lead to innovative and striking photographs. Don't be afraid to break the rules and let creativity guide your photography.

In the second part of the workshop, Kaushik Sir encouraged each participant to capture five photos of a subject of their choice. This activity allowed us to apply the knowledge gained during the session and put our observation skills to the test. Afterward, Kaushik Sir reviewed our photos and provided valuable feedback, guiding us on how to correct any mistakes and improve our photography skills. Among the participants, Avani Jani secured the first position, followed by Dhvani Pandya from the Life Science Department in second place, and Drashti Joshi in the third position. Here, I've shared the images of them.

Undoubtedly, the workshop proved to be an incredible learning experience for all of us. We express our sincere gratitude to Dilip Barad sir, Vaidehi Hariyani ma'am, and Megha Trivedi ma'am for organizing this enriching session in the English Department. As a culmination of the workshop, we had the privilege of taking a group photo with Mr. Kaushik Sir.
